Voice Over Internet Protocol
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a set of technologies used to deliver voice communication over the Internet. With VoIP, calls are made using digital telephones or compatible devices. Voice, or sound, is digitized and encoded before being transmitted over the Internet as IP packets. Upon reaching the recipient, the process is reversed, and the original sound is reproduced. VoIP can function on various high-quality Internet connections, including ADSL, 3G, Wireless, etc.
One of the key advantages of VoIP is its cost-effectiveness. Currently, VoIP calls to any landline in
South Africa are priced at 27c/minute, while VoIP calls to cellular services in South Africa are 49c/
minute. Additionally, international VoIP calls to major destinations like the UK, USA, Germany, etc., are
very affordable at 42c/minute (Please refer to Switch Telecom’s website for the latest call rates).
VoIP numbers in South Africa typically start with 087, but you have the option to “port” your old
Telkom number to your VoIP provider. If Telkom is unable to provide you with service but you wish to
retain your old number due to its familiarity with customers/family, it’s not a problem. With some
paperwork, you can regain access to your old number and resume business as usual in no time.
There are various devices available for making VoIP calls. Dedicated VoIP phones can connect directly
to your wired or wireless network, ranging from basic models to advanced multi-line digital displays.
Portable phones (DECT systems) offer mobility and excellent range. An ATA (analog telephone
adapter) allows you to continue using your old analog handset for VoIP calls by converting it for
Internet use via standard telephone plugs.
At Letaba Networks, supported by Switch Telecom, we offer a comprehensive range of VoIP services.
Whether you need a single VoIP service for your home or require integration of a VoIP Gateway or
VoIP services into your existing Analogue Office PABX, or even installation of a new fully functional
VoIP PBX with 2 to 200 extensions, we’ve got you covered.
